KITGUM KITCHEN TAKEOVER

For our next supper club, Kitgum Kitchen takes over Reading Room. There’s a real story behind this one, shaped by family, movement and time, so we’ll let Fayaz introduce it himself……

In 1972, when Idi Amin expelled all Asians from Uganda, my parents were among the 80,000

forced to leave. They carried one suitcase and recipes rooted in Gujarat’s Persian heritage, shaped in East Africa, and adapted over years in the UK.

Kitgum was born ten years ago in a Brighton pub as a “why not” experiment. With no

experience but a lot of heart, we paired my family’s unique food history with an obsession for

Music. After five amazing years at our beloved Preston Road spot, we recently closed those

doors to evolve, grow, and hunt for a new, larger home in Brighton.

The Experience

Our food is definitely not authentic. It is a living, breathing evolution of centuries of change,

served with a side of curated rhythm. For our pop-up at Reading Rooms, we are bringing back

the signature buzz and warmth that defined our Preston Road restaurant. Expect a menu that

honours my family and unique history, blending Persian, Indian, and East African influences into

something entirely its own. It’s a chance to share what we’ve been perfecting for the last

decade, and a taste of what is coming next for Kitgum.

See you there,

Fayaz
